Post 16 Transport

Assistance will not normally be available from us for post-16 travel. Students from families on low income can apply for bursaries from their school and will still be able to apply to us for discretionary assistance in cases of hardship.
Students with special education needs and/or disabilities
Where a student aged 16-18 is unable, because of a special educational need or a disability, to walk or travel by bus to their education setting, transport assistance will be provided. The mode of transport will be at our discretion and may be a shared taxi or minibus or a fuel allowance, depending on which is most appropriate and cost effective.
You will be expected to make a contribution to the cost of this transport. Students from families on low income can apply for bursaries from their school and will still be able to apply for discretionary assistance in cases of hardship.
If you are a student aged 19-25 and are unable, because of a special educational need or a disability, to walk or travel by bus to your education setting, free transport will be provided if the setting is:
- Maintained or assisted by the authority and providing further and/or higher education,
- An institution within the further education sector or
- An institution outside the further and higher education sectors where both education/training and boarding accommodation are provided, where you have an Education, Health and Care Plan and has been placed there by the local authority.
For all post-16 students, the mode of transport will be at our discretion and may be a shared taxi or minibus or a fuel allowance, depending on which is most appropriate and cost effective.
Awards for transport on the grounds of SEN or disability will be reviewed annually. A student’s entitlement will be reassessed according to their individual needs, their/the family’s current circumstances, council policy and legislation. The provision of transport assistance in one year does not guarantee provision the following year.
