What is CAMHS?
CAMHS is a service that works with children and young people to help them cope when they’re feeling sad, worried or troubled.
Our service aims:
- To help children, young people and families, including those with a learning disability and who are experiencing serious emotional and behavioural difficulties.
- To help these families, children, young people and their carers to find ways to develop to their fullest social and personal potential.

Referrals can be made through your GP, Health Visitor, School Nurse, Social Worker, or by self-referral. Referral criteria and forms are available as a download from this page and also on our website.
What criteria must be satisfied before children and young people can access this provision/service?
CAMHS (child and adolescent mental health) provide assessment and treatment for children and young people who are experiencing emotional and mental health difficulties. Treatment options include; crisis/self-harm assessment, CBT, EMDR, Family therapy, trauma work and Eating Disorder work. CAMHS also provides consultation support to professionals within social care, health, education and the voluntary sector.
Early intervention support is offered through the Primary Mental Health Work Team who are based within local schools.
How do we identify the particular healthcare needs of a child or young person with special educational needs?
CAMHS in Torbay work alongside colleagues in health and education to provide practical help and support to children and families with special education needs. CAMHS employ a Learning Disability Nurse to support with this.
How do we consult with parents and/or children and young people about their needs?
CAMHS workers can meet with parents, guardians, children and young people in schools or within the community at a variety of locations such as clinics or at their homes. CAMHS ‘have your say’ group is a group of young people, many of whom have accessed CAMHS services. They work closely with CAMHS to ensure that young people are at the centre of our services.
What is our approach to meeting the healthcare needs of children and young people with special educational needs?
CAMHS will liaise with education and health services to ensure that all children are treated in accordance with their needs. CAMHS learning disability nurse can support with this when needed.
How will we ensure we get the services, provision and equipment that children and young people need?
CAMHS staff work with many local agencies and liaise with them, as needed to ensure joined up treatment and support for young people.
How is this provision funded?
The CAMHS service is commissioned & funded through the local Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG). The Primary Mental Health Work Team is jointly funded through the CCG and Torbay schools.
How do we support children and young people with special educational needs moving from children’s services to adult's services?
CAMHS work within a 0-18 age range if support is required beyond this then CAMHS will support with a transition plan to adult services.
How do we assess and review progress towards agreed outcomes, and how are parents, children and young people involved in this process?
CAMHS provide all children and young people with accessing the service with an individual mental health assessment. Treatment plans are jointly negotiated with children, young people and families and clear outcome goals are a part of the care plan. Our service user group are involved in ensuring that CAMHS provide a good service for children and young people.
At CAMHS we regularly monitor if treatment is working for children, young people and families and each session we ask for feedback. Where the therapy does not seem to be working we discuss this with the children, young people and families and, where needed we revisit the treatment plan and goals.

How do we assess the effectiveness of our healthcare provision and how are parents, children and young people involved in this assessment?
Our service user group give us regular feedback about ensuring our service is child and young people friendly. This includes a whole service audit by our service users.
We use outcome ratings in every treatment session to gain clear feedback on the children, young people and families experience and where needed we use these to renegotiate treatment goals.
How do we ensure that healthcare staff and other staff have the expertise needed to support children and young people with special educational needs?
The team is made up of specialist mental health professionals from a range of backgrounds and professions. All of the team are registered with their professional body. This helps to ensure that all the most relevant and up to date practice can be shared with our clients to achieve best practice.
The team regularly attend training and CPD events to ensure their knowledge is up to date.
