Mindfulness retreats and courses

The Sharpham Trust runs mindfulness retreats and courses at its base on the Sharpham Estate, near Totnes, Devon.

We have been offering mindfulness retreats for 30 years on the Estate, and we also offer taster sessions, Introduction to Mindfulness days and recognised 8-week courses.

We help people to understand and apply mindfulness to their daily lives.

We run introductory taster days and 8-week courses (non-residential) at Sharpham House, Totnes town centre and Torquay, and we can provide programmes for beginners through to those with an established meditation practice. We can also offer bespoke and tailored programmes for other organisations.

What is Mindfulness?

Mindfulness is a skill that enables us to live our lives more fully aware and in the present moment.

Through developing a mindfulness practice we begin to notice our habitual thoughts and emotional patterns which are often associated with past or future events.

Being able to observe rather than react to those patterns can really help to manage stress and enhance our sense of wellbeing. A growing body of evidence recognised by the the National Institute of Clinical Excellence demonstrates the positive effect of mindfulness.

Sharpham House is a Grade 1-Listed Palladian Villa constructed in 1765 and as such there are certain limitations that prevent the building complying with modern access requirements. The Trust is endeavouring to make the building as accessible as possible given these constraints. We have installed a lift to our upper floors. We have a new, accessible ground-floor single bedroom in Sharpham House, located close to the lift. The Claire Milne room has an attached accessible bathroom. All of the downstairs rooms in Sharpham House are wheelchair accessible and there is an accessible toilet. The South Wing Hall is wheelchair accessible with an accessible toilet. Parts of the gardens are accessible to wheelchairs but some parts are not. The Trust owns a Conversor Pro assistive listening device which visitors are welcome to use on request. To reserve, contact the Programme Manager on We have a House Access Statement that goes into more accessibility detail, so if you want to see that, or if you have a question about access or facilities, contact our House Manager on
