School Nurses
School nurses promote health and emotional wellbeing in schools and in the community offering confidential advice, care and support on an individual basis to children and young people aged 5 - 19, parents, carers and also educational staff.
They provide a variety of services such as healthcare and sex education within schools, carrying out developmental screening, undertaking health interviews and immunisation programmes. School nurses can be employed by the local health authority, community NHS providers or by school directly.

Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust are working with Action for Children, The Children's Society and Torbay council as the 0 to 19 Torbay Partnership.
The Health Visitor and School Nurse team offer Community Public Health Nursing from the antenatal period through to the age of 19 years. We support families during pregnancy, with a new baby or a child up until the age of 19 years. We work with you to support you and your family to be healthy, providing health advice, support, drop in clinics, health checks and screening surveillance. We may work within GP surgeries, community clinics, schools, community settings and people's homes. Some of our work will be with individual young people and their families, some may be within groups. We work with other agencies such as Children's Centre staff, GP's, Midwives, Early Years' settings, Schools, Voluntary and Community groups and Children's Services.

How do we identify the particular healthcare needs of a child or young person with special educational needs?
The School Nurse in Torbay work alongside colleagues in health and education to provide practical help and support to children and families with special education needs.
How do we consult with parents and/or children and young people about their needs?
School nurses may meet with parents, guardians, children and young adults in schools or within the community at a variety of locations such as clinics or at their homes.
What is our approach to meeting the healthcare needs of children and young people with special educational needs?
School nurses will liaise with education and health services to ensure that all children are treated in accordance with their needs.
How will we ensure we get the services, provision and equipment that children and young people need?
School nurses work within the community and can offer support with accessing any other services who may be better suited for the child or young person’s needs.
How is this provision funded?
The school nurse service is a free universal service for all families within Torbay. The service is commissioned & funded through the Torbay Council.
How do we support children and young people with special educational needs moving from children’s services to adult’s services?
School nurses work within a 5-19 age range if health support is required beyond this then they will assist the young person in finding the best possible service for their individual needs.
How do we assess and review progress towards agreed outcomes, and how are parents, children and young people involved in this process?
School nurses communicate with clients and young people on a regular basis through a variety of media; this may involve phone calls, emails and letters.
Young people are consulted at all stages if appropriate.

How do we ensure that healthcare staff and other staff have the expertise needed to support children and young people with special educational needs?
The school nurse team comprise of specialist community public health nurses, registered nurses, and nursery nurses. The team have regular specialist training to ensure that all the most relevant and up to date practice can be shared with our clients to achieve best practice.
